Range and stability of structural colors generated by Morpho-inspired color reflectors.

چکیده
The range and stability of structural colors generated by Morpho-inspired color reflectors are investigated. We find that despite the internal randomness of such structures that gives rise to their Morpho-like angle-independent iridescence, their colors under ambient lighting condition can be predicted by simple transfer-matrix calculations of corresponding planar multilayer structures. By calculating the possible range of colors generated by multilayers of different structures and material combinations using such transfer-matrix methods, we find that low-refractive index multilayers with intrastructure absorption, such as the melanin-containing chitin/air multilayer structure from the Morpho butterflies, can provide not only the most pure structural colors with the largest color gamut, but also the highest stability of color against variations in multilayer structure.

Tropical Morpho butterfl ies are known for their iridescence. [ 1 ] Extensive research has been dedicated to analyzing the nanoscale architecture of Morpho butterfl y wings to understand their brilliant blue or white–purple iridescence The wing scales of Morpho butterfl ies contain 3D nanostructures that produce blue iridescent colors. Incident light is diffracted from multilayered nanostructur...
متن کاملNanofabrication and coloration study of artificial Morpho butterfly wings with aligned lamellae layers
The bright and iridescent blue color from Morpho butterfly wings has attracted worldwide attentions to explore its mysterious nature for long time. Although the physics of structural color by the nanophotonic structures built on the wing scales has been well established, replications of the wing structure by standard top-down lithography still remains a challenge. This paper reports a technical...
متن کاملStructural colors from Morpho peleides butterfly wing scales
A male Morpho peleides butterfly wing is decorated by two types of scales, cover and ground scales. We have studied the optical properties of each type of scales in conjunction with the structural information provided by cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy and computer simulation. The shining blue color is mainly from the Bragg reflection of the one-dimensional photonic structure, ...
متن کاملA Phenomenological Representation of Iridescent Colors in Butterfly Wings
The representation of the color of butterflies has always been a challenge to artists, whatever the medium involved. These colors are highly complex to reproduce, even with the use of computer generated images. This article introduces a new algorithm developed to simulate and generate the iridescent colors that are found on the wings of particular butterflies. The model presented here is based ...
متن کاملSpiritual reading influenced by colors in the architecture of mosques based on the movement path of the worshiper (Case study: Nasir Al-Molk Mosque in Shiraz)
Introduction: Colors are one of the elements whose symbolic meaning must be considered in such a way that the inner meaning of Islamic architecture and art can be understood. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to identify the components affecting the mystical reading of the colors used in Nasir al-Molk Mosque and to investigate the effect of each of them on the spiritual and mystical stat...
